Hi, I’m Krystle Cheirs-Roberts
I am a queer, multiracial, proud first-generation child of an immigrant with nearly 20 years of experience in the social work field. My work is deeply shaped by lived experience, cultural awareness, and the belief that healing happens best in spaces where clients feel safe, understood, and respected.
I provide culturally responsive, affirming therapy for clients from diverse backgrounds—particularly women, LGBTQIA+ and gender expansive individuals, and BIPOC clients. Many people come to me seeking support for anxiety, depression, identity exploration, life transitions, and navigating multicultural or multigenerational challenges.
Who I Work Best With
My clients are curious about themselves and the world around them. They might not always know what it is that troubles them, but they know they want to find out. My clients tend to be women, queer/trans-identified, POC, immigrants themselves or children of immigrants. They want to know how to navigate challenging relationships (with parents, friends, religion, work, and others), and how to be and express themselves fully. For what it’s worth, I also tend to attract other Earth signs (Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo) and Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces); not a must-have in a client, just something I’ve noticed.
My Approach
My approach with therapy is simple: I meet clients where they are. If they feel the urge to talk a lot, I let them. If I’m met with silence, I respect that. Building a therapeutic relationship is about building trust. Some clients like to be challenged, so I might offer questions to gain insight or even push back on what they’re saying. Others just want someone to listen without judgement, and so I meet them with curiosity and openness. And there are some who want tools or homework, and though I don’t rely on worksheets, I might offer a question to think about or a noting exercise. Some therapeutic relationships feel easy right away and others take some time to unfold. I’m here for all of them!
The main principle guiding my work is a client’s right to self-determination. For example, somatic work isn’t for everyone. Lots of people find it hard to get out of their heads and into their bodies. So if a client isn’t receptive to breathwork, I don’t push it. I really believe that deep down, a client knows what they want out of therapy even if they haven’t vocalized it. So in my work, I try to mirror what’s not being said. I also genuinely believe that giving a client space to think through their situation is important. I might probe gently or leave something said alone until a client is ready to address the topic.
Your First Session
A first session might be awkward at first, and I’m the first one to point it out. Sometimes this helps to ease any tension a client might be feeling, especially if it’s their first time in therapy. From there, the session can go from yapping about a favorite restaurant, or talking about what the client did with their weekend, or the thing they’re hyperfixated on at the moment. We don’t have to talk about your parents right away if you don’t want to! There isn’t really a formula for a first session with me, mainly because we’re just getting to know one another. This approach isn’t for everyone. And I always give an opt-out because what’s most important about a first session with me is that it made someone feel seen/heard and want to come back for the next one.
